Michigan Parenting Time

A Lawyer Focusing on the Best Interests of Children

At the Law Office of Victor J. Zanolli, I represent parents in all matters related to visitation or parenting time. Michigan law focuses on supporting the parent-child relationship after divorce and awards parenting time to the non-custodial parent unless there is some compelling reason to do otherwise. There is a strong presumption that it is in the best interest of the child to have a strong relationship with both parents. Each parenting time solution must reflect the unique circumstances of your particular situation. In some cases, I may be able to achieve this solution through negotiations with the other parent or his/her attorney. In other situations, nothing less than aggressive litigation in court will do. I strive to achieve your goals and a fair and workable solution that puts your children first.

Criteria for Awarding Parenting Time

The court considers factors such as these when reviewing parenting time proposals from parents:

  • Special needs of the child
  • Age of the child
  • The possibility of abuse or neglect while exercising parenting time
  • The length of time a child must travel
  • Whether one parent has threatened to remove or hide the child or has actually done so

Parenting time awards can be fairly general or very specific and include determinations of who is responsible for transporting the child, whether third parties can or cannot be present during ordered parenting time and how much notice must be given if one parent cannot follow the schedule.

Advocating for Children

As a family law attorney, I represent men and women in establishing parenting time schedules and in modifying them should circumstances change. Like the Michigan courts, I focus on the best interests of my clients' children and help parents understand the importance of parenting time after divorce. I discuss the options available to parents and help them understand the consequences of each. I am honest with clients and provide them with an assessment of their probability of success when developing proposals.

Cooperative Parenting

Parenting through divorce, becoming co-parents and mastering the art of working together for your children's sake is the most beneficial thing parents can do for their children. Cooperative parenting is an idea whereby ex-spouses agree to act jointly in the best interest of their children, by establishing two homes for them and consulting with one another concerning the needs of the children and their own needs as parents.
